Volunteer with Sea Turtles in Tortuguero (STA exclusive) (TCRCST)

Central America Costa Rica

Give back and learn more about sea turtle conservation in the beautiful Tortuguero region on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. This project is a must for nature lovers looking to make a real difference in conservation and protection of sea turtles. About this Project: Located near Tortuguero on the coast of Costa Rica, the Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation project studies turtles nesting on unprotected beaches. The globally endangered green, leatherback, hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to nest on beaches accessible from the station. Volunteers will take part in night patrols and will assist in tagging and data collection. There are no roads in the area, and visitors to Caño Palma Biological Station arrive by boat via a network of rivers and canals. How you can make a difference: Volunteering on this turtle conservation project means you are helping to keep a vital turtle protection program going - these programs need volunteers because they do not have enough funding to hire enough staff needed. Sea turtle conservation projects require a lot of hard work and a lot of time to build, clean, maintain, and monitor hatcheries and nesting grounds. It's important work to save these endangered species! A day in the life of a volunteer: •Assist with the biological monitoring program •Maintain the project’s facilities, yards and trails •Share in preparing meals and daily chores •Assist visiting researchers with data collection •Experience life in Tortuguero, where rivers meet the sea

Highlights: Best Bits: Work with researchers and experts at protecting endangered sea turtles - Learn more about conservation in Costa Rica - Spend 2 weeks in wildlife-filled rainforests and canals - Explore the National Park and surrounding areas in your free time
